First impressions

Foundry immediately appealed to me visually. Its modern, contemporary and industrial style creates the sort of atmosphere where opening a laptop feels completely natural, rather than as though you have quietly converted somebody’s lunch table into your temporary office.

I was welcomed almost as soon as I entered and my first chai latte arrived quickly. Although I was sitting relatively close to the counter, the coffee machine was barely noticeable—even during a moderately busy lunchtime.

There are several seating options, including larger tables, with plenty of space between them. The lighting was good, the seating was comfortable and there was adequate room for my laptop and a drink without having to perform a complicated game of tabletop Tetris.

The standout feature: exceptional service 

The defining feature of my visit was the customer service.

The staff were attentive without hovering, friendly without being over-familiar and genuinely engaging whenever I initiated conversation. When I asked which dish was most popular, they were happy to discuss the options and offer helpful guidance rather than simply point at the menu. Later, when I made eye contact with a member of staff, they noticed immediately and came over without my having to wave anyone down.

I experienced that same natural warmth from at least three different members of staff. That consistency matters because it suggests this wasn’t simply one particularly friendly employee—it felt like part of the culture of the venue.

I was also able to keep a tab open, which is a small but valuable convenience when working or meeting somebody. It meant I could order a second drink without packing away my laptop or repeatedly interrupting what I was doing to pay.

Most importantly, I never felt rushed or as though I had outstayed my welcome. The staff seemed to read the situation perfectly: available when I needed them, relaxed while I was working and happy to engage when conversation arose.

Working from Foundry Coffee

I felt completely comfortable getting my laptop out, and several other customers were using laptops, tablets or notebooks. The seating remained comfortable throughout my visit, ordinary business conversations could be held without feeling exposed and neighbouring tables were sufficiently spaced.

Some power sockets are available, although only at selected tables, so it would be worth choosing your seat with charging in mind if you intend to stay for several hours.

Free Wi-Fi was easy to join using an email address.

The noise level was moderate, with quiet background music. Conversations and a fridge working particularly hard during the heatwave were more noticeable than the coffee machine, but neither prevented me from concentrating. A Teams or Zoom call would probably be best attempted with headphones.

Meetings, food and facilities 

I would happily bring a client or business contact to Foundry for a general meeting, informal catch-up, networking one-to-one or brainstorming session. The combination of spacious seating, comfortable surroundings and excellent service would reflect well on the person choosing the venue.

Foundry offers full meals, a good selection of hot drinks, decaf and alternative milks, with choices for different dietary requirements. Outdoor seating, air conditioning, quiet corners and some charging points are also available.

The venue has a step-free entrance, wheelchair access and an accessible toilet, with reasonable room to move around the tables.

Foundry is easy to find in Grove Road, within Eastbourne’s Little Chelsea area. Paid and on-street parking are available nearby; I found free on-street parking approximately seven minutes away. Both bus and train links are within walking distance.

Best for

Foundry Coffee would work particularly well for:

• Solo laptop working

• Informal client meetings

• Business catch-ups and networking one-to-ones

• Brainstorming and creative work

• Small group meetings

• Working between appointments

• Anything from a quick 30-minute stop to a longer working session

Power sockets are available, but they cannot be reached from every table. 

Final verdict

Foundry Coffee proved to be a comfortable and genuinely laptop-friendly place to work through a Friday lunchtime. Its modern surroundings, spacious seating and unobtrusive coffee machine all contributed to the experience—but the staff were what elevated it.

Customer service is one of the biggest factors in whether I choose to return somewhere, and Foundry absolutely delivered. The team made me feel naturally welcome, understood when I wanted assistance and allowed me to work without intrusion.

I would happily return to work for a few hours, meet somebody for coffee or arrange an informal client meeting here. In fact, the quality of the welcome alone would be one of the main reasons I'd chose it.
